Conor McGregor: The Rise and Fall of The Notorious MMA Champion
Conor McGregor is an Irish professional mixed martial artist and boxer who has achieved fame and success in both sports. He is known for his charismatic personality, trash talk, and flashy lifestyle. Here is a short biography of his life and career:
McGregor was born on July 14, 1988, in Dublin, Ireland. He grew up in a working-class family and developed an interest in boxing and football at a young age. He attended Irish-language schools and later moved to Lucan, where he met future UFC fighter Tom Egan.
McGregor started his MMA career in 2008, training under John Kavanagh at the Straight Blast Gym. He won his first amateur fight by knockout and then turned professional. He won his first two professional fights by knockout in the first round. He then joined Cage Warriors, where he became a two-division champion, holding the featherweight and lightweight titles simultaneously.
McGregor signed with the UFC in 2013, becoming the second Irish fighter to do so. He made his debut at UFC on Fuel TV: Mousasi vs. Latifi, where he knocked out Marcus Brimage in the first round. He then went on a six-fight winning streak, defeating notable opponents such as Max Holloway, Dustin Poirier, and Chad Mendes. He also became famous for his trash talk and antics, such as stealing opponents’ belts and wearing custom-made suits.
McGregor achieved his biggest victory at UFC 194, where he knocked out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds to become the UFC featherweight champion. He then moved up to the lightweight division and challenged Eddie Alvarez for the title at UFC 205. He defeated Alvarez by TKO in the second round, becoming the first fighter in UFC history to hold two titles in different weight classes at the same time. He then took a hiatus from MMA to pursue a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
McGregor made his professional boxing debut against Mayweather on August 26, 2017, in one of the most anticipated and lucrative fights in combat sports history. He lost the fight by TKO in the tenth round, but earned a reported $100 million for his performance. He then returned to MMA at UFC 229, where he faced Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title. He lost the fight by submission in the fourth round, and was involved in a post-fight brawl that resulted in suspensions and fines for both fighters.
McGregor made his comeback at UFC 246, where he knocked out Donald Cerrone in 40 seconds. He then faced Dustin Poirier in a rematch at UFC 257, where he suffered the first knockout loss of his career. He is expected to face Poirier again in a trilogy fight at UFC 264 on July 10, 2021.
McGregor is also a successful businessman and philanthropist. He has launched his own whiskey brand, Proper No. Twelve, and his own clothing line, August McGregor. He has also donated millions of dollars to various charities, especially in his native Ireland. He has a partner, Dee Devlin, and three children: Conor Jr., Croia, and Rian.
